A Mini-Guide to Locking Mailboxes

{ Posted on Apr 28 2010 by Brad }

With the threat of identity theft looming over all of American, the best kind of mailbox is a secure one. That’s why mailbox locks are so important if not imperative, for one’s own peace-of-mind.

Identity theft and other crimes related to mail are a reality of today’s hectic life. Thus, while you may be in hopes identity theft crimes will never affect you, each person should be prepared for it.

Locks come in different sizes and types. The best type of secure mailbox is the key-insert. With the key-insert boxes, there is not a chance combinations might be broken. However, key-inserts can be picked by those talented enough to do it successfully and unfortunately many such people do exist and thrive in the world.

The problem with combination locks is they come looped and looped locks can be snipped or pried apart with any effort at all. Key-inserts are available plated, which means they can be soldered or cemented to the mailbox, making it more difficult to remove.

Furthermore, some key-insert locks come with covers to block of the key hole. Ultimately however, more than one lock would provide the certain security and assurance needed. With locks, a mail slot in the box door or side is essential.

Is this convenient? Well, if you consider that such an effort avoids the inconvenience of having to change bank account information, straighten out credit card problems and the fact it can reduce all-around stress then yes, it is convenient by a long shot.

Take care of yourself and protect your privacy and identity at all costs!
