Instead of paying a handy man to install your new mailbox, why not consider doing it yourself? With a few simple instructions and a little time, almost anyone can successfully install residential mailboxes. The first step is to think about where you’ll place the box.

You may want to check with the USPS for any guidelines regarding box placement in your area. They have strict regulations and can require you to move the box if you don’t follow their rules.

Next, you’ll need to gather your materials. Buy a mailbox that can withstand any type of weather. While a metal box may be less expensive, it may also require more upkeep if it rusts. Many people are choosing to go with the plastic residential mailboxes.

You’ll also need to buy a few posts (one for the mailbox to rest upon and one that anchors it into the ground. Also, be sure you choose a mailbox with predrilled holes so you can ensure you can perfectly line it up on the post.

Dig your hole and fill it with concrete. Place your anchor post into the hole and allow it to set overnight. Be sure you’re doing this project in dry weather, or your concrete may not set correctly. The next day you can secure the shorter post to your anchor post and then secure your mailbox to the shorter post.

Installing your own residential mailbox is a very simple job, once you have the materials you need. Not only can it save you money, but you’ll feel great knowing you did it yourself.

Chances are you can think of at least three mailboxes in your community that stand out to you. Whether your neighbor has a pink flamingo mailbox or a fire truck mailbox, you’ve likely noticed.

Unusual mailboxes not only draw a driver’s attention, but they come with many other benefits as well.

1. They become an assistant when giving directions. If someone wants to know where you live, chances are you’ll give them a list of daunting directions to follow with the ending line being your numerical address. However, chances are your possible guest will waste a great deal of time searching house numbers as they are driving down your street. So, if you have an unusual mailbox you can instead just mention your mailbox and instead of your guest looking for faded house numbers they can quickly spot your place!

2. They allow you to show a bit of yourself. Unusual mailboxes are not only functional, but they also allow you to put a bit of your wackiness out into the world. If you want your home to stand out amongst the other homes on the block, it’s great to have a great mailbox. Your guests and neighbors will be able to see a bit of your personality and reflection within your crazy mailbox!

3. They are an inexpensive way to add curb appeal to your property. There is nothing worse than a boring black mailbox! Thus, having an unusual mailbox is a great way to add instant curb appeal to your property. In addition, it’s a curb appeal add that doesn’t cost a bundle of money.

A classically beautiful a href=”http://www.securitymailbox.com/items/categories/” target=_blank >mailbox can add sophistication to your home’s exterior. However, any mailbox is vulnerable to destruction without a sturdy mailbox post. Most mailbox posts can be purchased already constructed. They are often made of composite material or of wood. Composite posts are made of material that is nearly indestructible.

It will not rust, warp or split. There is also no risk of termites with composite mailbox posts. Another popular option is the steel or metal a href=”http://www.securitymailbox.com/items/categories/?prod=Mayne-Mailbox-Posts” target=_blank >mailbox post. These posts are very durable. However, they can easily rust and often require yearly painting.

While many people buy already constructed posts, other people choose to make their own mailbox posts with wooden posts. To install a mailbox post, you should dig a hole (approximately six inches deep). After the hole is created, you must fill it partially with wet, mixed concrete. While the concrete mix is still wet, the mailbox post should be inserted down into the hole and held until the concrete sets.

Whether you decide to go with a pre-constructed composite post or decide to create your own using lumber, you should find a mailbox post that is sturdy. This is especially true if you live in a rural area.

Those homes located on busy streets or within the curve of a road should take extra caution in choosing their post, due to possible car accidents. Overall, the sturdiness of the post will determine how much damage your actual mailbox gets, should an accident of any kind occur.

Are you stuck with a boring black mailbox? If so, you may want to add curb appeal to your home with terrific mailbox covers. Instead of making a committed box change, you can easily and quickly change the entire look of your mailbox with an inexpensive cover. There are many different styles you can choose, allowing you complete freedom in your choice of outdoor home décor.

A mailbox is often no more than a metal box on a post. It’s quite boring! With mailbox covers you can change the look of your mailbox to match the seasons. For example, during the Christmas holiday your mailbox can don a festive cover. However, when the snow melts you may want to change the cover to a more floral variety.

The great part about utilizing mailbox covers is that they’re inexpensive. In addition, they protect your actual mailbox since they block the sun and weather. Your box won’t need as much maintenance and painting if it’s clothed in a mailbox cover.

Sports fanatics can also utilize mailbox covers to easily dress up their box for the sporting season. Wives may not be willing to buy an entire expensive mailbox dedicated to their husband’s favorite football team. However, they’re likely to be much more willing to allow their hubby’s the pleasure of putting out a mailbox cover during football season!

Overall, mailbox covers can be easy ways to add flair to your home curb appeal. Your neighbors will be jealous. So, go ahead and start choosing your mailbox covers today!

In order to add to the appearance of their home’s exterior, many homeowners add planters to their front porches or to their lawns near the street.

Some even add flowers around their mailbox to add color to their landscape design. Combining a mailbox and planter is becoming more popular. It can make a good impression whether on the porch or on the curb.

One such design of a mailbox planter uses the traditional post with small arm on which the mailbox is extended closer to the street, making mail delivery easier. On the back side, a planter in the same shape, size and color offsets the front of the mailbox into which flowers are planted.

Adding a few flowers at the base of the mailbox can make it even more colorful, presenting additional appeal to the exterior of the home.

On the porch for those whose mail is delivered to a wall-mounted mailbox, a planter can be added to the sides, or under the planter, to add color to the exterior of the home.

Care must be taken to prevent damage to the mail when the flowers are being planted. Traditional metal mailboxes can also be painted in a floral pattern to better fit into the mailbox planter theme.

Choosing colors for the mailbox planter is easier if they are made of wood or metal and painted. Using stone to make a planter that is adjacent to the mailbox can create a stronger area, but the colors will be limited to the available stone colors.
